Examining whether and how temperature and oxygen changes influence how micronutrients are used in marine microbes and what the consequences of those changes might be for biogeochemical cycles.
We are looking for a motivated student to join our monthly cruises to Boknis Eck time series station in the Baltic Sea to monitor the spatio-temporal patterns of B-vitamin cycles using metabolomic approaches. The MSc project aims to better understand the (phyto)planktonic contributions of thiamin (vitamin B1) to the Baltic Sea's pelagic food web, as well as how microbial interactions adapt to changing conditions. We use targeted metabolomics and metaproteomics to track micronutrient dynamics and identify and quantify their effects on marine microbial activities.
We offer a master's thesis in collaboration with the University of Vienna (Gerhard Herndl Lab). The lab work will be mostly conducted at GEOMAR, with monthly ship-based sampling activities in the Kieler bight. Finally, we intend to publish the results in a peer-reviewed research journal.
